Should i catch the b notes with an upstroke or what. What about the bass notes...should i just pick in the direction or what?

I would use hybrid picking which is pick the bass notes with downstrokes and my pinky and ring finger of my picking hand to play the B octaves(high notes).
But it is kinda tricky to get the feel so I don't know ehy using an upstroke on the B's wouldn't be good.It probably is the proper way.
