Question:I write songs. I play the piano.. but somehow the two just don't go together to well. So I want to take up the guitar as well.

Because I want to play the guitar just during the writing process, and I'm fairly broke, I need to learn the guitar with a book. Any REALLY good books?

ohh, and I'm not a very good music reader, I mainly learn piano by watching fingers..?

A good thing for you to do seeing as you already play piano and write your own songs, is to pick up a chord book for the guitar. By the way you say you learn by watching fingers, you should be able to pick up strumming and other basic techniques fairly quickly as well. Getting a good grasp of chords is something a lot of guitar players neglect initially, as they are only interested in playing power chords and learning riffs. But your interest in songwriting again shows that you are looking for something more. A chord book will allow you to try all the basic chords, and augment your songwriting with a wealth of different chords and phrasings. These books present the chords in a way that allows you to play the chord in the easiest way, with diagrams showing fingering etc. Good luck!!

I have played guitar fo 6 years and the book i started with is really good it will help you learn to read music extreemly esily and it will show you the finger places it is called "Mel Bay's Modern Guitar Method Grade 1" its fantastic search it on google and it will tell you how to get it!

guitar for dummies is good cuz it teaches you common chords...once you learn those ur basically home free, it's up to you if you want to go on to neck progression, reading tabs, scales etc.

I use the book "Guitar for Dummies." It teaches you how to play acoustic, electric, and classical guitar. Plus it comes w/ a CD-ROM. It has lots of tips and resources to help you along the way.
