Question:I want to major in music - vocal.
Are the auditions hard?
If I have choir as my singing experience, is that good? Or should I get a voice teacher?
I have a general understanding of what notes are which and if the piano is played, I can match the pitch of the keys played.
What else do I need to work on?
Should I learn the piano? If I do not learn it or learn it but am not perfect, will I struggle a lot?
Is music theory hard, or can I take beginner courses that will take me step by step?
What are some good universities that have vocal programs? Not necessarily the really good ones, but just state schools, etc. And not opera ones.
Anything else, your experiences, etc. would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks!

For a freshman the audition should not be hard. Contact the school's music department and ask what they expect.

Choir experience is good.

It's good to know some keyboard. If you can play a few elementary classical pieces that's great.

Work on sight singing and theory those are the hardest classes in my experience.

Checkout a program called earmaster. I think you can try it for free. It teaches interval and chord and scale identification. I really like it.

Good luck with your studies.
