Question:They always say you never really finish learning on the guitar, and to me this rings *very* true. I guess all I can do is try to focus on my favorite aspect of guitar (blues, classic rock sounds) and not worry about the rest? What do you do, what would you suggest, etc.? Should I get a teacher so that I can regain my "focus?"

Don't let professional guitarists intimidate you. They were once at the same place you are in terms of their ability. I would advise you against lessons because personal experience has taught me they're a waste of money. DVDs, videos, and books are much better. One DVD and book set I would recommend highly is the "Fretboard Logic" series. You definitely need to develop the basics before you get into styles, and Fretboard Logic is a great place to start. Check out the following website for great deals on DVDs, videos, books, and virtually all kinds of guitar gear:

P.S.: You won't get where you want to be unless you practice, practice, PRACTICE!!!

I like guitar and find it intimidating too. When I hear amazing guitarists, I get half inspired and half demoralized (knowing that I will never be that good) so I just concentrate on what I can do and not worry about what I can't...

(ie - I'm always trying to improve but I don't try to be anyone else but me)

Play that sucker everyday, many times a day.
Play music and styles that interest you.
Listen intently to your favorite music.
Try to pick out the tune.

Also, hang around with pickers you admire.
Their playing styles and song repertoires will tend to rub off on you.

It is like the first law of economics.....If you apply no input.....you will reap no output.

Good luck

PS: Oh yeah, concern yourself not at the abilities of others. Worry only about your abilities, and your song set.
There will always be someone better, and someone worse than you, whereever you go.....unless you are Tommy Crook.

PSS: Yes, I agree completely with Megalomaniac.
