aha, I did hear a guy play a guitar once and he produced this effect by picking the string then while it was still sounding with his right hand he pushed down on the string BETWEEN THE NUT AND THE TUNING MACHINE.
The effect was very similar to a banjo sound. You have to push fairly hard.

hmm. Well, either play it on a deeper string at the 5th fret to do a vibrato, use a little whammy bar on an electric, or do the infamous neck bend, in which you hold onto the body of the guitar and pull the neck forward, slacking the strings ever-so-slightly.

best best is to play the same note one string deeper and vibrato the old fashion way.

On an acoustic guitar, there's not much you can do to add vibrato to an open string. (An electric guitar has a whammy bar which can be used for this effect.)

On a banjo (where the body is a thin membrane and can be loosened or tightened to the player's tastes), you can add vibrato by using your wrist to press on the body after playing a note.

The sheet music you are using is probably more applicable to banjo than guitar, so needn't worry about techniques which don't cross over the different instruments.
