Position:Home>Performing Arts> I dream of becoming a musician when i grow up?

Question:im 15 right now and i want to be a musician or be a bussinessman in the musical industry when i become older. i play guitar and i have alot of experience in it. ive been playing since i was 11. i know advanced theory. i write songs. i performed about 7 times last year, not that much, but this year i am going to perform 20-40 times and im touring with some people in boston and new york and philly and balitmore in the summer. i have my own band. i have played 5-7 other instruments in my life. i practice my own instrument everyday day for 1.5 to 4 hours a day depending on the day. i have 5 guitar classes a week, 1 lesson a week, 2 band practices a week and in two years i will take a Music Business Class in 11th Grade.

as you can see i have done everything i can so far to prepare me for the career in music i want to be in after high school.
my question is.... what else can i do? this is my dream and i will do anything to achieve this goal.

well good luck with that then..sounds like you are preparing to do well..i have been a professional drummer for 30 years started playing when i was 8 and have had alot of success...especially in the 80's and 90's when rock and roll ruled the world...just remember this...save your money....it wont go on forever now i did alot of saving and am glad i did music changes all the time and when rock went away a little bittimes were hard...i kept myself going by working as a studio musician..which i still do as touring sucks after awhile...and its a great gig but its not a ful time job its maybe 4 or 5 gigs a month and yes it pays really really well but inbetween you have to rely on what you have saved...just be carefull out there its a very hard business to make a living at...good luck and rock on

Relax. You've done enough. Just don't be surprised if you can't find work because my father is a professional musician and has a hard time finding gigs.

If you want to be in a band you should probably work on some 'attitude' or some type of persona. Just look at Fall Out Boy and do the exact opposite.

You have done everything you can and more.. so go on pursuing your dream.. It can become true!
Good Luck

Post-secondary institutions are now offering (more than ever) studies in commercial/jazz music, and arts management. I would suggest looking up what are needed for auditions (it is never too early) and try to get in contact with the school. Try to have lessons with the teachers and go to workshops/concerts/masterclasses that they offer. There are usually schools that specialize in this type of music. For example, Berklee college of Music is excellent. Work on your improvisation and be sure to be able to play in different styles. Keep studying the theory, all sorts of theory. Learn traditional counterpoint and harmony which may be required depending on what university/college/conservatory you go to. Also it will help with your composition. For the business part, learn your math and take the more general business classes as well.

Good Luck!
