Question:A chord is a pattern of 3 or 4 notes.

●A major chord's notes start on the root note and the next note is 2 whole steps from that note and the next is 1.5 steps from the previous. For example, C major's notes are C, E, G because E is two whole steps from C and G is one and a half steps from E.
●A minor chord's notes start on the root and the next note is 1.5 steps and the next is 2 from that. C minor is C, Eb(D#), G.
●A diminished chord's pattern is 1.5 steps then 1.5 steps. C diminished is C, D#, F#.
●A 7 dominant chord (sometimes just called a 7 chord) is the notes of a major chord with the flat 7th of the root note (you must know the theory behind keys and scales to understand that. if you don't, just think of it as a half step down from the root). C7 is C, E, G, Bb.
●A 7 major chord is the notes of a major chord with the 7th of the root added. Cmaj7 is C, E, G, B.
●A 7 minor chord is the notes of a minor chord with the flat 7th added. Cmin7 is C, Eb, G, Bb.

There are more chords than that but those are the basics you should know first. Using those patterns, you can put together chord shapes on your guitar.

you can get a chord chart and figure it out from there.Covering some songs will help by looking at some tablature just to give you an idea of how a particular song/melody is composed.
