Go to www.wholenote.com, go to the articles tab and search for "Performing at Open Mic Venues" It is a good article.

I had that problem at first. Here's some advice:

You may want to start out backing up another more experienced artist. That will take a lot of the pressure off you.

If you want to sing and play your own stuff then see if you can get another musician thats experienced playing out to accompany you.

If something happens that distracts you or if you mess up just ignore it and roll with it. Most pros screw up from time to time but nobody notices because they just keep on going.

The best advice I ever heard was this:
Imagine that you are at home jamming and keep that feeling in your head. Just go out there and lay it out there. People will appreciate that.

Hope that helps and best of luck!!!

May I suggest starting off in small kareoke (sp?) groups and 'growing' from there?

Keep performing. Eventually you will grow accustomed to being on stage in front of people.

Good luck!

A couple of thoughts for you:

1) Make sure you're really comfortable with what you are going to perform.

2) Get as much "performance time" in as you can. Play/sing in front of anyone who will listen to you. The more times you can get through playing in front of people, the more confidence you'll have.

3) Accept the fact that the best of us screw up in performances. Audiences are forgiving because most have been in that position before and understand.

4) Understand that the people listening really want you to do well. If you're comfortable with what you're playing - they will be comfortable listening to it.

5) Remember - performing is an experience that you will live through. And even if you mess up - you can use this experience to help you prepare for the next one.
