Position:Home>Performing Arts> Can songwriting be learned, or is it just natural born talent?

Question:Well, songs are made up of two main parts, the lyrics, and the music. I'm guessing you mean the lyrics, but just in case I'll cover both.

The lyrics of a song are basically a poem, they have the same structure, except the chorus (the passage that is repeated more than once in a song, usually the most recognizable part of any song), a poem usually does not have anything like a chorus. What make a song a song is that the words are then laid over music to create a flowing rhythm.
Writing lyrics is mostly natural born talent, you can learn the structure and basics of poetry, but you can't really go any farther, the lyrics have to come from you, from a message you are trying to convey through words, you might find help in a language teacher, just tell them about what you want to do, and they might help you with poetry.

As for the music part, because I doubt this is what you're after, I'll keep this short, but as for the music, yes, it can be learned. You can get a teacher to help you learn an instrument, such as guitar, but you have to learn notes and chords to easily write music, not tab.

When you combine both, BINGO, you have a full song.

there should be something that is inspiration. It's hard to physically learn it but if you have something to write about or an emotion to express and you're willing to let go it should work. Just let it take over you!
Hope i helped!!

No you can learn it. There are fomuals. Chord patterns that repeat. Rhyms for your verses.

i dunno. can you tell a story? if you can tell a story than you can write a song.

you seem to be proud of being a christian - well, the people who wrote the books that became your bible were great story-tellers. Jesus was an excellent story-teller - he made up stories about fictional characters in situations that his audience could relate to. Of course, he called them parables.

oh, the delicious irony.

look, start by playing two or three chords, and try not to be too preachy. go from there.
