I'm a voice teacher and choir director. Not only have I sung so many auditions I can't list them all, but I also have sat in the judge's seat on so many of these things... So here is a friendly list of please don't do's for you. =D

When I read it over, it sounded kinda bossy. But, these are things that I hope my students will remember when they audition.

Please don't sing something from the show unless they have requested it.

Please don't try out a song you've never sung before... if nerves happen, you'll be sunk.

Please don't try to out-do someone else, it makes you look like a diva. I personally would rather cast someone not as good than have to deal with an I'm all that attitude for 10 weeks... I can teach vocal skill but hate dealing with a jerk.

DO focus on being the best YOU can be... this sends a much better message, and you'll get a lot more accomplished. Don't spend ANY time fretting about the competition. Wasted time and it makes you crazy, which in turn makes you not sing as well. Focus instead on the meaning of the words you are about to sing.

Don't worry about impressing the judge with your music selection. I can tell what kind of a singer you are if I hear you sing Mary Had A Little Lamb. Focus instead on presenting the song you picked to the best of your ability, both as an actor, a singer, and as a human being.

Sing a song that one, you know really, really, well, and two, a song that you like, and three, a song that I haven't heard sixty jillion times. I never in my life ever again at an audition want to hear anything by andrew lloyd webber (except the unexpected song, that one is nice... for awhile), anything from rent, wicked, les mis, or cats. I also never want to hear anything sung by mariah carey or anything from a disney movie.

This may feel that there isn't much choice left, but not so! You know thousands of songs, you really do... start listing them out on paper, you'll surprise yourself. Include everything that comes to mind, including kids songs (if you don't you won't be able to think of anything else. But don't sing those either. =D) Then, cross off everything that you've ever heard anyone else do in an audition; chances are the director will just be thinking "not this thing again" instead of listening to you... we are human, you know.

If you still need ideas for soprano: How Could I Ever Know from Secret Garden, Moonfall from Mystery of Edwin Drood, aren't done very much at all. My Fair Lady, Anything Goes, Oklahoma!, Porgy & Bess.

Hope that helps you. Break a leg!

Sing either a song from the musical or whatever you auditioning for that has very strong vocals and shows you have a large range. Or you can sing a song that has a large vocal range that isn't from the musical. Umm... something from Beauty and the beast... or like a spiritual song. Something from mariah Carey{if you can pull it off} ummm... my country tis of thy or something like that

Something that suits your vocal range. Are you tenor, soprano? Details, I need details.

If you're like me and have a voice where you can't reach too high or too low, try Avril Lavigne's song "Nobody's Home" or "Hot". You need powerful vocals and confidence to pull off anything. If you're confident, you will blow them away.
Here's a list of song names I can think of that are easy to sing:

Avril Lavigne: Hot, Nobody's Home, Innocence, When You're Gone
Seal: Kiss From A Rose (forget the intro to the song, start at the 1st verse)
Taylor Swift: Our Song
Creed: One Last Breath, Higher

Don't attempt Mariah Carey or Whittney Houston. They are too good of artists. People who try their songs always get turned down at American Idol and besides, you're voice has to be perfect, you know what I mean?

There's my opinion. Hope I didn't sound harsh.. :]
Good luck! I wish you the best! ^_^

It really depends on your vocal range.

If you need a song from that musical, 'If I were a bell' is a really good choice. But if you need a song from a different musical, try some pretty ballads that would show off your voice. In my experience, ballads work best to impress.

If you're a soprano, 'Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again' from The Phantom of the Opera is really pretty, as is 'Poor Wandering One' from Pirates of Penzance. Both go a bit high, but I'm an alto, and I can pull them off when my voice is properly warmed up.

If your an alto, 'On My Own' from Les Miserables is really pretty. Another pretty song is 'Far From The Home I Love' from Fiddler on the Roof, but I'm not quite sure what range that requires.

Break a leg at your audition! Guys and Dolls is a really fun show.
