Position:Home>Performing Arts> What to wear to see Alvin Ailey in Charlotte, NC?

Question:Hi All! I'm heading out to see ALvin Ailey next weekend at the Blumenthal Performing Arts Center in Charlotte, NC. Does anyone have any idea what the attire for this would be? Its a Saturday night at 8pm...so my thoughts tend to favor a suit for guys and maybe a dress for girls...but I'm not sure. Has anyone been to a show or been to Blumenthal and seen the attire? Thanks!

Hey,
I am so happy for you, I've been a fan of Alvin Ailey's company and work for years. I saw them perform in New Orleans, about 11 years ago. I like to attend performance events, such as going to the ballet, opera, symphony, broadway type plays. I usually say it's better to be over dressed than under dressed. I would suggest a classic, lil black dress. If it's warm...go with a a short black dress, maybe right at knee length, sleeveless, off black stockings and black heels. Add a jacket or shoulder scarf if its going to still be cool for the night. You could also wear a simple dress of a solid color, maybe wine, navy, silver, grey, or dark red. Don't wear flashy prints, flowers or bright colors that would make you stand out too much at a night event. Keep it simple. Sleek, maybe if there is sequence, or one decorative silver item on the dress, then kool. For the guy - a dark colored suit, and shirt and tie of his choice. If the guy doesn't have a suit, then wear dark colored nice slacks, with a buttoned shirt and tie. Dont wear khakis, or tennis shoes. Dont forget the tie, it makes it look like you came prepared to attend a nice event. Your dress or skirt can be longer if you like, but not draggin the floor, you dont need a ball gown or after-5 prom type dress. You can wear dark silk pants as long as they look dressy, nice silk, of soft flowing fabric, and your blouse or shirt could be a white, pink, beige, or grey color, should be shiny, shimry, or sleek - to make your pants look dressy. Pretty dressy heels that match, and a TINY purse for a nite event always finishes everything off nicely. Don't forget matching earrings, necklace, and bracelet - it finishes the outfit. Most of all, have fun, dont talk during the performance, look great, and enjoy the performance!!! I hope they perform, Cry, Revelations, or some other peice that is one of their classics.

Have a great time!!! :)
