What you need to know depends on what type of guitar you wish to play. Acoustic nylon string guitars are very different from electric guitars, for example.

A good acoustic guitar should have a nice, straight neck (possibly with an adjustable truss rod) with good action (how hard it is to press the strings down on the neck). The neck should be a comfortable width for you so you can easily form chords. The guitar should have a full, rich tone. The construction should include adequate bracing to make sure the top does not collapse (look inside the sound hole to see the bracing). The bridge (piece of the guitar to which the strings are attached) should be firmly attached to the body of the guitar and should feature an adjustable saddle (the piece on which the strings rest). The pegs which hold the strings beneath the bridge should be tight. Individual machines for tuning are usually the best, but less expensive guitars will have the machines on strips. The guitar should have good intonation, which means that a "C" chord on the third fret should sound the same (the notes should be the same relative to one another) as one played higher on the neck. The guitar should stay in tune even after a good workout. Some good acoustic brands include Yamaha, Gibson, Taylor, Martin, Seagull, and Ovation. My personal favorites are Gibsons because they are so beautiful.

An electric guitar should have many of the same features - straight neck, good neck width, good action, individual machines, adjustable bridge, and good intonation. A good electric may also have an adjustable truss rod in the neck. A good electric will have at least a tone and a volume adjustment. Electrics will have pickups which carry/produce the sound, which is where the humbuckers come in. Humbuckers are a type of pickup which are also known as dual-coil, double-coil, or hum-canceling pickups. Gibson uses them on their Les Paul models. Fender puts one humbucker on its Stratocasters. The best known brands are Gibson and Fender, but Danelectro and Rickenbacker as well as many other brands are available. My SO has a Fender Telecaster which he loves; I have a Gibson Les Paul Junior because I like the body shape.

Hope this helps.

Humbuckers are groupies who have given so many hummers that they are now buck-toothed.
