So do we all. But the agents who can actually do that think we're all unproven amateurs. So the only agents who will take us on are rip-off artists who will charge us a big fee up front--and then will produce no work for us, but will certainly call in about a year to remind us that the next year's fee is due.

If you want to break into voice acting:

Get training. A BFA degree in theatrical performance from a good university program is ideal. But whatever you need to do to build up that golden throat is the right thing.

Then shop yourself directly to advertising agencies in niche and minor markets. Make sure you have a really good audio cd showing what you can do as an announcer. You can wind up doing commercials for car dealers and locally owned restaurants if you are persistent.

Don't neglect any work that you might find in live theatre or locally produced TV/radio. Nancy Cartwright (voice of Bart Simpson) get started doing that voice on local radio in Dayton, Ohio, as a guest comedy spot on a show.

Once you are getting that kind of work, you are ready to shop for a legitimate agent, one who will retain you and not expect to be paid except as a percentage of your salary from voice jobs. Ask people you've met while working about agents; they know who's good in your area.
