Position:Home>Performing Arts> How do I get my voice to sound less choir like?

Question:In 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade, I was the lead in musicals for my school. Yes, it probably doesn't really make a difference, but my voice sounded a lot better there than it does now. I think it is because I wasn't in choir then, and now I'm in choir, and I am a Soprano. My choir teacher always makes us sing really high parts and we usually sing songs from musicals. I sound good when I sing those songs, but when I want to sing something different, like pop, it sounds terrible because I'm still in that "choir voice" where it sounds very high and kind of opera like. How can I make my voice get out of that "choir stage" and make it sound more like my speaking voice?

what you can try is say something like Hello World, but stop on the vowel "hello Woooooooo" this is your speaking voice, it is more in your chest and less in your head. Try to feel the vibration in the chest, imagine the sound streaming out of your chest.
but yeah, do not force it too much, you really have to keep your diaphragm tense, in order to take away the strain from your vocal cords.

Talk to your teacher about this one. If you try to mimic pop stars or go to a more speaking-style way of singing, it can damage your vocal cords if not done properly. Lots of singers we know of today sing in a way that will hurt their vocal cords in the long run. You need a professional's advice on this one!
