Question:I'm confused, my teacher says I need to tongue my notes more.
This is my second year of playing the flute and I don't know how to do this.
I mean, when I slur my notes and just play them normally it sounds different.
I'm confused.
Please help.

Read Quantz on playing the flute. He mentions the easy, first step tonguings (pronouncing "ti" or "di") but also mentions other ways of articulating a note. Once Quantz has started you thinking, you can go on and experiment with the expressive possibilities of the tongue. Listen carefully as you practise the same passage using different tonguings.

For instance, you can start a note explosively - with "ti" or (slightly softer) with "di" , but softer still is "li" or "ri" - or just flapping the tongue briefly, barely interrupting the air-flow, for a very legato, but still not quite slurred, effect. Then try double-tonguing in fast passages. In this you use the tongue on notes in pairs, using the tongue two ways for speed. A hard tonguing might be "tiki tiki", softer is "diddle diddle" followed by "lily lily" or "liri liri".

All of these take practice, starting ultra-slow and then building up speed as your tongue gains strength and agility. Be careful, right from the start, to keep the tongue in step with the fingers - this is where the ultra-slow practice to get a clean change from one note to the next comes in.

Good luck.

make the "DU","DEE",or "TEE" sound.[[if you want lol]]

The top of the tip of your tongue touches just barely above the back side of your two front teeth on the gum. It touches very quickly and moves backward immediately after touching.

Yes, it is indeed important to sort of "whisper" (NOT sing!) those doo/too syllables mentioned by the other answerer, that is what tongueing is about!

You need to start the note with your toungue!

1) say 'Tee'
2) Notice where your tounge starts from ( It should start at the top of your top teeth!
3) Thats tounging!
