Yes...
They are hired to find cast members for a film. They then give out something to agencies they are affiliated with called "breakdowns".
These contain height restrictions, look restrictions and body types they are looking for in actors, such as what roles they will be playing such as a killer, best friend, or champion soccer player.
They also have other restrictions such as the talent must be both SAG affliliated and ACTRA affiliated. (this is usually the case)
You cannot try to contact a casting director for auditions.
And you must have an agent to attend any auditions, as the casting director will be present, and if you aren't a client of one of the agencies they have contacted you will be asked to leave before your audition has even begun.
