1. Know your piece inside and out. I doubt your audition will be very long as audition times are limited. They might ask you to start in the middle of the piece, so it's important you're confident and comfortable with the piece.

2. Dress professionally. If you're female, don't wear any tops that exposes your chest, and don't wear heels that make you walk like an ostrich.

3. Know WHY you want to be a music educator. They'll probably ask you this. If you have any experiences that stick out in your mind as the point you decided you want to be a teacher, tell them!

4. Think of some goals for yourself. Do you want to teach in a public school? Do you want to only teach high school? Middle? Elementary? Your degree is most likely for K-12 (secondary), but you can have an area of specializiation.

5. Be familiar with basic music theory. You might have to take a theory placement exam to know what theory class you'll be starting with. Check the school's website for expectations on the exam. A good website for review is www.musictheory.net. They have lots of lessons that will probably be close to the level of the exam.

6. Arrive ten minutes early, just in case auditions are ahead of schedule.

7. Be CONFIDENT. They've probably heard the pieces you'll be singing. If you're confident in the interview and the performance, it will set you aside from the rest.

8. Be ready for sight-reading or scales. Sight-reading is standard for any musician, but scales might not be for a vocalist. Make sure you know what is expected of you for the interview.

9. Don't let mistakes throw you off. Don't even ACKNOWLEDGE you made a mistake. This is often a habit acquired somewhere before coming to college, and you'll have to get out of it ASAP. Most people never know you make a mistake, and if the judges do, they will be impressed you can keep the piece flowing and not let it trip you up.

10. Adding on to the confidence, always look them in the eye and shake hands very strongly. Even if you can't feel confident, you can trick them in to thinking you're confident:)

Be prepared- excersize your voice before going on and make sure you know every word, every note of the song. If you can, get a friend to help you practice by accompanying you on the piano. Then....take a deep breath.....and relax.
