Position:Home>Performing Arts> Color Guard & Baton Twirling?

Question:I've been baton twirling since I was 8, and just recently quit because I had to move. I want to try out for Color Guard next year. I heard that Color Guard has to do with flag twirling and uses mock rifles and swords, things like that. Should I try out, and is there any resemblance between these two? (( If it's completely different, then I probably don't want to try out, etc ))

What you've heard is correct. Color guard is pretty much the same as baton twirling but you use flags, rifles and swords. Some still use just plain batons. Other than that, I would think it is pretty much the same.

um. when i was colorguard captain throughout high school, there was nothing in our manual about twirling. you don't twirl a united states flag! colorguard does more professional stuff, like assemblies and such, when the national anthem is sung.

it may depend on your state, and what regulations you have. but, for army, fancy rifle has always been exhibition armed drill team. which is choreography with rifles while also marching. they do the less fancy events, such as half time on the football field. i did both. but you should ask your director. if they see your interest, they'll love to recruit you.

also, my sister was on the flag team, which may be closer to baton twirling. this team is like what you would see marching in a parade, or in the choreography of the halftime show with all the dance girls. although i do not know what dance teams your school offers. check into all of them, because you may join one and find out half way through that you should've joined something else.

you should totally try out for color guard. I've been on color guard since my freshman year (i'm a senior), and i've had so much fun. Yes, it is different from baton twirling...but it is a lot of fun. Yes, it involves flags, rifles , and sabres. My suggestion is try out, and if you really dont like it, then quit. but it is TONS of fun.
