Question:why do guitar necks get longer as they go down?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: why do guitar necks get longer as they go down?

Cutting through all the sarcastic answers, I think you mean wider rather than longer, but I don't know the answer. All stringed instruments with necks do it - guitar, banjo, mandolin, fiddle etc etc. Whether is has to do with structural strength or whether it makes it easier to play, I cant say. I know the frets gewt closer together, but that's to maintain the correct intonation. Hope this helps.

You must have your terminology mixed up b/c your question makes no sense...

you should re-phrase your question

Well you see there is a lot behind this. Say you've gone 12 inches, or the equivalent of one foot down a guitar neck. Well, try going 3.5 more inches. Now you've gone 15.5 inches.

As you see, 12 + 3.5 = 15.5, and 15.5 > 12. Thus, the guitar neck is longer.

Actually your question makes no sense. Do you mean why do the frets get narrower the closer they are to the soundhole? It results in perfect design of course.
