Guitar for Dummies is a good book for teaching yourself.

If I understand your question correctly, you are having trouble reading the C note on sheet music..not the C chord? On the staff, the lines from the bottom are: E G B D F. You can remember this by "Every Good Boy Does Fine." In between the lines are: F A C E. The strings from the top (lowest sounding string) are: E A D G B E. You can remember this by: Ed Ate Dad's Good Breakfast Egg. Yes, the top and bottom strings are both E. If you need any extra help, please feel free to email me. I taught myself the basic guitars with Guitar Playing for Dummies on dvd. From there I started looking up tabs and stuff on www.ultimate-guitar.com
