Ok, to the person who suggested Dreamgirls...I don't think ANYONE can pull that off besides Jennifer Hudson...especially anyone in High School...

Pick a song that's good for the role. Don't choose a sassy, mezzo, belting song for Maria in West Side Story. And don't choose "Tonight" if you're trying out for Ado Annie in Oklahoma.

I like to do underdone pieces that are less well known, so as to not bore the director.

I recommend:
-for a soprano, romantic lead:
"How Could I Ever Know?" from the Secret Garden (a personal favorite)
"In a Little While" from Once Upon a Mattress
"A Little Bit in Love" from Wonderful Town

-for a sassier, mezzo, belting part:
"Shy" from Once Upon a Mattress (my favorite song in the 4th grade...lol)
"A Bushel and a Peck" from Guys and Dolls
"All That Jazz" from Chicago
"Maybe This Time" from Cabaret
"You Can't Get a Man with a Gun" from Annie Get Your Gun

-for children's roles:
"Little Lamb" from Gypsy
"The Girl I Mean to Be" from The Secret Garden

-in general...
"I'm Not Afraid of Anything" from Songs for a New World
"You Don't Know this Man" from Parade
"My Funny Valentine" from Babes in Arms

good luck!

If you like High School Musical the song You are the Music in me is a great, easy song to learn! GL! (Good Luck!)

to be in a lead role you have to have a really good and broad range so it needs to be a song that shows off your vocal skills here's a few songs

if you're a soprano:
Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again- The Phantom of the Opera

if you're mezzosoprano:
The Wizard and I- Wicked

if you're an alto:
And I am Telling You (I'm Not Going)- Dreamgirls

what is the musical? and your vocal range?

What show are you auditioning for? Often that can help you make good decisions in regard to your song selection.

Being that you have stated that your goal for your audition is to land a lead, here are my suggestions- now I'm assuming that you have already been in shows with this director or somewhere else, and that you have a STRONG solo singing voice, as well as acting/ dance skills. These are simply prerequisites for earning a lead in a musical.

I would suggest you first ask your director about the show that you are auditioning for, find out its name and who wrote it. Then I would ask if you are allowed to audition with something from the show... the answer is sometimes "no" so clear that with the director ahead of time. If the answer is yes, do your homework...

If you still feel up to the challenge... your song could be selected either from the show itself or written by the same composer/ lyricist team, but it needs to be THE lead character's defining song or a similar song in style/ and character personality. Listen to recordings, practice with your accompaniment ahead of time, sing from memory, and act it out larger than life! Its about singing well, singing out, and being believable as that character.
have a great audition!

If you add what show you are auditioning for, I will try and help you with more specific song selections :)

Tied Together With A Smile - Taylor Swift (shows you can sing a variety of notes, and sing like you mean it)

What I Wouldn't Give - Holly Brook (same as above)

Walkin' On Sunshine - Aly & A.J. (shows you can act while you sing)

Songs from other well known plays would be good too (like The Sound of Music).

Good luck!

If you let me know what show you'll be doing or what role in the show, I could help you more. It's difficult to give suggestions without that info... but feel free to send me a message if I can help out more.
