Position:Home>Performing Arts> I would like to restring a righty Yamaha acoustic guitar to a lefty. Any advice

Question:I can turn it upside down and swap the strings, but the nut has a slant to one side and I don't think I can simply "flip" it. My online research did not yield any Yamaha specific parts. Please give me suggestions on the restringing process and ways to take nut measurements and possibly a venue to buy the nut. Thanks for your help.

You might try http://www.stewmac.com If anyone has parts for left handed guitars, they would. I put a few more links for left handed guitars below. I have never ordered from them but they are all active as of today. Your other option would be to take the guitar to a luthier and have the luthier set up the guitar properly. Remember that in addition to the neck nut, the saddle has to be modified as well. Also, the strings should be checked for intonation. If the guitar has been played much, you might also want to get the frets checked. Where the frets would not be an issue as long as the guitar was set up the same way, there may be some buzz or even a sharp spot where a string might get nipped if the action was reversed. Hope this helps.

I don't know of any good lefty nuts for Yamaha. I'd be inclined to make the nut or have it made out of bone or micarta. Check out www.stewmac.com for ideas. Be sure to check the bridge saddle for lateral or horizontal slanting too!
