Guitar Question?

My friends and I are making a band and I was wondering how long it will take me to learn to play the electric guitar, since all of my friends can already play their instruments really well. Also does anyone have any suggestions or tips for learning the guitar really fast?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Don't fret! Playing guitar takes a long time. Well it actually depends on how talented the player is. Don't worry I'm not one of them. I've been playing for 3 and a half years. All you need to know is how to press the notes and cords down firmly on the fretboard. It is also best to learn how to read staff, TAB, and cord names. Knowing a few basic cords might be helpful. (A,Am, C, D, A2, D2, E, Em, F, G, G7, A7, B7, C7, D7 ,Dm, E7, C add9, B, and Bm) Once you know these cords and can play them pretty well you can pretty much pick up any song with cords in it and play most of it without having to constantly look up how to play certain cords. With an acoustic guitar you'll be able to play anything from hard rock to classical. Learn a little Finger-picking style and know how to strum and use a pick. After that you'll need a private lesson teacher. I advise a teacher that plays rock. They are brighter than they look. To play good rock music they had to start like you. No one evers starts to play rock right away, It's too hard that way. They all have to start from classic or acoustic at first. Best way to improve while having a private lesson teacher is to take advantage of them. You're paying them so do wat you want! Go get songs you like off the internet (best to find pages with both lyrics and cords) and if you can the song itself. Put the song on a CD and print off the pages. Bring them to your private lesson teacher and make him teach it to you. Make sure the song doesn't have more than about 4 cords that you don't know or it might be too hard. Slowly work up from there.
If your teacher is really good he's be able to write out the rifts and small solos in the song. Usually the pages won't show those. Learn those and you'll sound awesome! To increase speed do picking excersices(like Estring 1st fret then Estring 2nd fret then to Astring 1st fret and Astring 2nd fret and so on)
you can then do 1-3 1-4 and 1-5. If you really want to challenge yourself after that do them back down too.

Everyone says practicing at least 30 minutes a day will help you improve greatly, and it is true! But we all get lazy sometimes or we don't have the time (even me!). Still try to practice at the very least 3 times a week, anytime when you're stitting around doing nothing. Learning music takes a long time so keep trying hard. People you see in Rock bands or people you know probaly have had at least 30 years of expeirence so they will be better. Just ask them how they did it and they're tell you "PRACTICING A HECK OF A LOT!" Try to learn as much of it as early as possible becuase once you get in High School and College you won't have much time at all. People might also tell you to learn Theory. It's so hard I tried and I was always so confused. But once you know it you can basically play as well as they do.
SO NEVER GIVE UP AND KEEP PRACTICING!!

>_0 ME Depends what style of music you are going to play. If you are just gonna be using power chords, like most rock bands these days then not very long... You don't know how to play the guitar at all yet? Hmmm, may take a while, depending on how fast of a learner you are. Maybe 3-6 months if you concentrate on just learning the songs that you will play. Don't give up though, it's gonna sound pretty bad at first, but everyone does! this is a nother part of my guitar quest,
so yes i will fix it?
how about an elected official guitar instructor
know everything goin on right now How to play fast....years of study and practice....there are no short cuts to learning guitar...especially if you want to do it right....Your talking about a band....and don't even know how to play yet....forget about it.....start studying your guitar first and let the others who know how to play to start the band....It's going to take you at least two years to get your hands ready for playing....it takes at least three months to get the callouses that you need to play without pain !!!!! So unless your a genius or have perfect pitch....just concentrate on knowing your guitar....and help out with the band in other ways. You say your friends play really well...well how long did it take them to learn....not over night I bet.....and when you say really well are you talking about knowing all the notes, being able to read music, know what key their playing in etc.....I've dealt with lots of kids that have said that they can play really well....and guess what all they knew were a few power chords and they thought that they were guitarist.....I'm not trying to bring you down....I'm just trying to make you face reality....to get good at guitar you have to study it and spend many years before your even think about playing or forming a band !!!!! Would you want to spend money to go hear someone play who was only playing for a year and really didn't know what he was doing.....so go study your guitar.....and good luck !!!!!!!! Its been said that the guitar is one of the easiest instruments in the world to play really, really badly -- and one of the most difficult to play really well.

Practice, practice, practice. There are no shortcuts. If you actually want to play music and do it really well, you have to put the time in. Ask your friends who already play really well how many thousands of hours they spent practicing and studying their instruments before they got to the level they're at now. Ask them how many hours a day they practice now, to learn new songs and keep up their skills. How long it will take you to learn to play guitar well enough to make a positive contribution to your friends' band will depend on you and your commitment to the learning process -- if you are willing and able to practice 10 hours a day, you'll get there a lot faster than if you only put in 1 hour a day of practice.

Get a teacher -- someone who can teach the style of music you want to play -- and take at least a few lessons to make sure you get started on the right foot and don't develop any bad habits that will hold you back later. Learning to play an intrument comes more from the passion you put into it, i think. It won't sound very good if you just learn as fast as you can and do it just to do it. An instrument played well is an art, and it takes many hours of FOCUS and practice. You have to want to learn and compose.

Otherwise, just have your friends show you exactly what to do and practice it over and over. Good luck. If its' something that you REALLLLY want to do, that's the only way you'll learn it quickly.
