Question:

Musicians...help!!?

I've been playing acoustic guitar for about 2 years now..i still cant play very well..what am i doing wrong..?..Is this normal..? How long did it take you to play guitar well?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Don't fret! Playing guitar takes a long time. Well it actually depends on how talented the player is. Don't worry I'm not one of them. I've been playing for 3 and a half years. All you need to know is how to press the notes and cords down firmly on the fretboard. It is also best to learn how to read staff, TAB, and cord names. Knowing a few basic cords might be helpful. (A,Am, C, D, A2, D2, E, Em, F, G, G7, A7, B7, C7, D7 ,Dm, E7, C add9, B, and Bm) Once you know these cords and can play them pretty well you can pretty much pick up any song with cords in it and play most of it without having to constantly look up how to play certain cords. With an acoustic guitar you'll be able to play anything from hard rock to classical. Learn a little Finger-picking style and know how to strum and use a pick. After that you'll need a private lesson teacher. I advise a teacher that plays rock. They are brighter than they look. To play good rock music they had to start like you. No one evers starts to play rock right away, It's too hard that way. They all have to start from classic or acoustic at first. Best way to improve while having a private lesson teacher is to take advantage of them. You're paying them so do wat you want! Go get songs you like off the internet (best to find pages with both lyrics and cords) and if you can the song itself. Put the song on a CD and print off the pages. Bring them to your private lesson teacher and make him teach it to you. Make sure the song doesn't have more than about 4 cords that you don't know or it might be too hard. Slowly work up from there.
If your teacher is really good he's be able to write out the rifts and small solos in the song. Usually the pages won't show those. Learn those and you'll sound awesome!

Everyone says practicing at least 30 minutes a day will help you improve greatly, and it is true! But we all get lazy sometimes or we don't have the time (even me!). Still try to practice at the very least 3 times a week, anytime when you're stitting around doing nothing. Learning music takes a long time so keep trying hard. People you see in Rock bands or people you know probaly have had at least 30 years of expeirence so they will be better. Just ask them how they did it and they're tell you "PRACTICING A HECK OF A LOT!" Try to learn as much of it as early as possible becuase once you get in High School and College you won't have much time at all. People might also tell you to learn Theory. It's so hard I tried and I was always so confused. But once you know it you can basically play as well as they do.
SO NEVER GIVE UP AND KEEP PRACTICING!!

>_0 Maybe you should think about switching instruments. I sucked at guitar, but was pretty good at bass. My fingers are too short for all the chords. of course you're not gonna be a hendrix yet, fact is the more you play the better you get. practice by playing music that is slightly challenging but not impossible for you. keep doing this overtime kind of like a workout program. if you still do not improve, maybe guitar isn't right for you Depending on your teacher - I strongly recommend a tutor. But to be really good it takes a life time... I'm musically talented (not everyone is- I play 6 instruments and can sing tenor, alto, and falsetto-soprano), so it only took me a few weeks to get it down.
For the average person, it takes one to three years. To learn all the chords (or at least the six basic ones), the correct form, to move your fingers quickly, and do all that simultaneously is very difficult- don't get discouraged.

To get better faster, consider private lessons. I know they're pricey, but if you take one or two per week, you should improve within a few months or so.

Hope I helped, and good luck! If your guitar is cheap you will never play well. Have you tried a quality instrument at a music shop? If that's not it then more practice. and 2 years is not very long for most people. tekes a long time to get really good. How did you start....with a teacher or on your own....I found that people who teach themselves don't progress as quickly as those who take lessons. I've taugh someone in my family acoustic and she's doing very well, right now she's working on Canon in D, and she can play songs like Yesterday by the Beatles, fingerstyle, Carmen, and songs like Greenslevees, etc. Are you playing fingerstyle, notes, or just chords....I love acoustic played fingerstyle, I think it sounds more professional and more accomplished. Why not get a book by Hal Leonard, he has a book out called, "The Very Best of Fingerstylle Guitar," it has music notation, tabs, words, and chords, and I think someone with two years of study could mangage this quite well. They have this book on his site, and at Sam Ash, another song in this book that you may like is Claptons's "Tears in Heaven". Maybe you just got off on the wrong foot without a teacher....and did what most kids do and that's to learn power chords and forget about some of the more important things in guitar playing. Why not have a look at some of these teaching sites....and see what you think....the free ones aren't that good...and the others are quite good, but some only give a few free lessons and then want you to buy their online lessons, DVD's, video's, or Cd's, I'll list some of the free ones first :
