Question:

What are some good tips to do before I even start playing the bassoon?

I haven't started playing the bassoon, but I am really looking into playing it, and it is coming my way, are there things I can do to prepare to learn the bassoon. I only know how to read treble clef, and I play flute and alto sax.

Anything I can do to prepare?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Start learning bass clef. Bassoon music is written in it! Some more advanced stuff is also written in tenor clef, but you won't need to deal with that for at least a couple of years.

You could get a reed like someone else suggested and start learning how to blow into it. With the double reeds you need to have both lips curled around your teeth rather than just the lower like on sax. a basoon like a monkey......cool I wish i could play with animals...are you a vet? Because if you want to play with a basoon you should be a vet.

P.S. maybe you should carry a banana or a fruit of some sort because I think they will be nicer if you have something to offer it. Have fun.. Well the first thing you need to do is get rid of your boyfriends, you need to focus all you blowing powers towards the bassoon. if you get lonely go out and buy a Dick in a box. you could get a double reed and practice blowing through it. I know that sounds wierd, but double reeds are strange things. Other than that, basoon is a lot like the flute in fingerings so you've really got a good start. If you can already read music...
(You'd be surprised who can't)
And can already play two woodwind instruments...

Then what are you worried about?

And I'm sitting here going, "If I play this guitar riff to this clicktrack will my iMic record it in time?"

(I hope this puts things in perspective) The bassoon is a reed instrument. Since you know how to play the sax. It should be easy for you to play. The only tips I can give you is it's heavier and more expensive. It doesn't attract the women and it's hard to write songs for. If you are are considiring the symphony..it's just a background instrument. What are your goals? You may want to start lifting weights. Dem tings is heavy! I'd start to learn the bass clef, and to try and talk to bassoon teachers in your area and ask them if they have advice. You can also find recordings of bassoon concertos and start to listen to them to hear what excellent bassoon solo playing sounds like.

The bassoon is a beautiful instrument, not always background in the symphony orchestra as someone stated - there are some prominent solos.

Good luck and have fun!
