Question:

Should I get an expensive violin or wait until I get in orchestra ensemble? I ask because..?

my old orchestra teacher had an amazing chamber, but it was difficult to get in. I wanted to get private lessons and a $2k violin so I'd have a better chance of getting into his chamber but my teacher went to another school; we got a younger teacher who combined intermediate, advanced, and chamber into advanced and "ensemble", against the wishes of those already in chamber. I've asked people in there and they've said the music's been dumbed down. I'm not so sure now I want to throw $2k when I might not get in, or isn't the chamber I wanted to enter in (Because my old teacher's chamber was wonderful, and challenging, and the new teacher's chamber might not be as challenging). I'm in advanced, and I'm not in first violin (Always played 2nd) or section leader (The teacher makes 2nds take turns leading while I help out a girl who needs to catch up). Could someone explain to me the differences between German and Italian violins? I'm not sure about which one I should get or what kind o' wood

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Get the expensive violin. It will help you play better, and give you more confidence. A better instrument has better tone and it's configured so you can play faster. It is possible for your instrument to hold you back. In college, I hit a point where my instrument was holding me back, but I only had 1 semester left, so I figured it wasn't worth it to get a $10k instrument. My $2k lasted me that long. Source(s):
