Question:

Can someone give me some advice?

I am 17 and a junior in high school.
I have been taking voice lessons for a little over 2 years.
I have always though that by now, I would be a really good singer.
I will admit, that I haven't practiced that much.
I feel like my singing isn't that good.
It is my dream to be a vocal major in college and I am afraid I won't be good enough.
I would have to audition in the spring of my senior year, so that gives me a little over a year to improve.

There are just so many people out there who are better than me.
Do you think if I start practicing 2 hours a day, I will really improve?
Can someone give me some advice?
Thanks!

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Well for a start, to improve you have to put in the work. I know you already know this too. Don't make it the same old scales or songs everyday though. Make it fun! Try rearraging and transposing some songs. Sing things at different octaves adn see which suits you better.
I know it sounds corny but I hope you don't roll your eyes when you read this.
You really have to be devoted. You have to make it seems like you're into it at least. Mean what you sing.
Remember just because you practise everyday doesn't mean you're going to improve. it's going to gelp a lot, but not everyone has amazing voices. Some are just average and some are just plain bad.
Don't be too hard on yourself. From what you say you're already pretty good voice and with all the extra practice I think you can do it. well if you really start to practice just the simple things 1st then work your way up to the harder stuff so you don't work your voice too much. i am also interested in being a singer but i've been told that i naturally have a good voice but i still practice around 2 hours a day. i would also encourage you to do a school play!!!

good luck!!!!!!!! Hello, FABULOUS,
As they say "Practice makes perfect.." So practice and see, but just don't push yourself too hard, you don't want to burn your desire to sing out...
Good luck! Try to practice in your spare time try a hour and a half for now and work your way up,and don't worry there will always be someone below you and above you its just life. Yes, but don't strain your voice. A bad voice is better than no voice at all. Good luck! that's the main problem in singing. You must believe in yourself to get the full sound of your voice. If you are shy and don't believe in yourself your voice is also down. Just be like Samurai, to have your voice strong you also must be strong in thought also Praticing is the way to go!! If you aren't where you want to be now by the time the audition comes around you will most likely begin to feel more confident about your singing. But if that time comes and you decide thats not what you want to do anymore than thats fine too. My best advice would be to try your best practice as hard and as much as you possibly can and evalute your life and do what makes YOU happy! Remember just because someone has a natural ability of singing doesn't mean that they can't loose it by not practicing. Practice make PERFECT!! Having played violin for 8 years of my life, I can tell you it takes more than just practice to be good. Ya gotta have talent. And to be outstanding, it takes a whole bunch of it to make you stand out. And to really be good, you have to be dedicated.

So - if you're fairly good and just want to get a degree so you can teach middle school choir - that's one option. If you want to sing professionally - you might be good enough for a lead, or you may end up in the chorus.

I would talk with your vocal coach about what your chances are for your future. considering your voice and talent. If you trust them to be honest with you about your future and you are clear that you aren't looking for a pep talk but an honest assessment of your abilities.

And yes, practice will help, if you got the tubes and the ear for the music you sing.

Truth is, there is always going to be someone "better" than you, as there will be someone better than those whom you think are better than you.
