Question:

Does this make me a genius, or jus a good musician?

i got my first guitar in june and i can now play over 10 songs.i'm even learning to lead instead of strum.. all this is without official lessons. oh and i've always been able to draw, with both hands

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: First off, congrats on getting far without formal teaching.

Secondly, dont go thinking you'r the best thing since sliced bread after 4 mnths. I too am self-taught and have been playing (piano with guitar on the side) for +- 5 years now. I can remember loads of tunes (well, i did, im a bit rusty at the moment), but never did i think im a genius. In fact, theres is still a lot i can learn. I think its foolish to think youve reached the peak, musically

Can you play blind-folded? Can you sing and play at the same time flawlessly?
You might be ambidextrous (id give my left arm to do that, lol)
but like someone said;can you play the guitar the other way around? Most importantly: can you play by ear, after hearing a track once?
That separates the true geniuses from those that are just good with music.

Hope that grounds you and makes you more determined to carry on playing! (Make me eat my words ;)) This makes you ambidextrous, what is the difficulty of the songs? and a genius will never never never even think about calling himself a genius, also you may learn how to spell, and do no, repeat, do not get so conceited. My little brother has his own band and he never took a music lesson. good musician I suppose...

I taught myself bass in a week, and now I can play bass and guitar. I never took a lesson. It isn't really that tough besides the fast double-picking. It sounds like you're doing really well! It is possible that you are a genius.

However, may I point out that even Mozart took music lessons (albeit from his father)? With the help of a good teacher, you might be able to hone your precocious talent. I've never met a "musical genius" who was able to achieve a high level of artistry without the help of some sort of mentor or teacher. Unless you can fret with both hands, drawing has nothing to do with this. And also, it's possible that the songs you are playing are really easy. I wouldn't say that it makes you a good musician or a genius, but you may be on your way to being a good musician. The songs could be easy: I could learn ten opera arias in a month if they are repetitive and I've heard them a lot, and my ear could automatically tune to the key making me able to solo if I needed to or harmonize.
