Question:

Guitar lessons?

I was thinking of taking up acoustic guitar lessons and was wondering if private lessons are usually very expensive and how much more expensive then just classes.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I have guitar lessons. I go to a Music Academy, and my teacher does group lessons as well as private lessons. I have private lessons, and pay £280 for a 10- 14-week term; group lessons are half the price, and I started out having them, but didn't like the fact that everyone's playing at once; it was hard to concentrate.

If you can afford it, it's really worth spending the extra on private lessons. You get your teacher's undivided attention that way (provided of course he or she is a good teacher) as he/she is not flitting around from pupil to pupil, which is what happens in group lessons.

Most teachers will let you pay by direct debit instead of paying a lump sum, which makes life a lot easier for some people.

It's always advisable to get a teacher rather than to teach yourself, though; that way, you know when you're going wrong, and you develop your own style and technique, which has to be taught, and cannot be acquired without guidance.

I would also advise you to begin with a nylon-strung guitar, as your fingertips will hurt when you first start if you've never played before, and nylon strings are less painful to the fingers. You can always go over to steel strings later if you want to; the advantage of a steel-strung guitar over a nylon-strung guitar is that if you have small fingers, as I have, the neck of a nylon-strung guitar is normally wider than that on a steel-strung guitar, therefore stretching is easier on a streel-strung guitar.

Practising will be tough at first, whichever guitar you choose, because it does hurt, but it's a vicious circle; the more you practise, the more your fingers hurt, but conversley, the more you practise, the more quickly your fingers will get used to it. Then you will develop pads, and you'll eventually be able to practise with little or no pain.

Good luck, whatever you decide, and enjoy your lessons. I do hope I've been of some help. take classes dont. i never took a lesson in my life. its stopid. i play by ear, but you can even look up chords online and start from there. its a lot more worth whille teaching yourself. teachers suck private lessons. its so much better. the lessons all about you and how youve progressed and if you dont understand something the teacher will explain it to you. you get to do alot more of hands on stuff when its one on one. its really not that expensive either. It varies greatly....it's usually cheaper if you go to your local music studio....then if you were to have someone come to your home, when students come to my house I usually charge less.....so you see it all depends....you can even go to local colleges and have group lessons....so get busy on your phone and ask around....I'm sure your going to get a wide variety of prices !!!!!! get some private lessons
