I don't know anything about them and I need to buy one as a gift. What's the best type? How much do they run? So I need to buy anything else to go with it?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: There are 2 types of bass guitar - solid and acoustic. Both really need an amp, but you can use an acoustic bass unplugged. Depends what sort of music your recipient (lucky person) wants to play. I have a Crafter acoustic that I really like. There are plenty of solid bldy ones ou there. Is it possible to go to your local music shop, look at prices,, explain your intention to an assistant and have him/her demonstrate a few for you? Hope this helps. Source(s):
Gutarist for over 45 years. A Fender Precision bass is a very good all-around bass for both beginners and advanced players. The Squier sub-brand of Fender also makes a Precision bass in a lower price bracket. To get a decent bass, you should expect to spend at least $400 on a new instrument.

You should also buy an amplifier of some kind, so the player can hear the bass in its full "voice." Fender Jazz Bass is good ($500 & up) G&L make a great bass ($995 & up) Musicman also has one of the best starting @ $1000) You also need an Amp and they start at about $300 for one big enough to perform with.
