Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The smaller the number, the larger the cup size. Most professionals and legit players play on a larger mouthpiece. And I'm assuming you are talking about brass mouthpieces, trumpet. Smaller cups are more helpful with high notes, apparently. Bigger is always better though - open up your tone.
