Private lessons will be the most effective - but you should also be teaching yourself, watching videos, having friends show you stuff, jamming with people, and most of all ....

LISTENING.

You can get a decent guitar and set up for like $200 - $300 u can get it from guitar center or go to musiciansfriend.com
its to start out on acoustic build callsus and learn theory and everything. uc an teach yourself go to youtube.com they have videos and ultimate-guitar.com has a lesson and a forum that can help. u can get lessons but that is usually over priced pay somebody, if you can -
I've had to teach myself, because no one in my area gives lessons, and it can be hard and frustrating.
A teacher will be able to show you what to do, which is a lot easier than figuring it all out yourself.
Videos can be helpful too though. start on acoustic unless you want to just delve into fancy stuff acoustics can't do. It may be harder to start and prob can't jam with anyone for a while but it pays off when you pick up an electric, it is a lot easier to use and makes playing songs easier, faster, and more enjoyable. I always tell everyone that asks me that I think the best way to learn guitar is tto have a good teacher...but today people are so lucky, you have online lessons, DVD's, Videos, Cd's, books, and places like you tube, so if you can afford it have a teacher, otherwise check out some of these sites, the first listed are free, I 'm not a big fan of the free lessons because they leave you hanging, I feel the same way about the free sheet music, I'd rather see you order music from a music store, usually it's the poorest rendition of the song, and not very full !!!! I also like to see beginners get a Yamaha acoustic...one that's about $200.00, on sale they are...and the G.C. is very good with giving you a deal....just ask !!!!!!!! Please remember to play them all....I can't say this enough... they all have a little different action, feel, and sound....so play around and you'll see what I mean !!!!!!!!
