Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I have just finished doing a BTEC National Diploma course in Performing Arts at college and I must say that it was great fun and helped me build my confidence.

You do acting, singing and dancing. My course however was more acting then singing or dancing but we did do some singing and dancing. In my course which was two years long we looked at 18 different units. We did a couple of units to improve our acting skills, musical theatre in which we did a pantomime. We also did a unit to improve our voice which included singing, script writing in which we had to write our own script and directing in which we each had to direct a extract from a play amoung obviously various other units.

After you have finished a performing arts course you could go on to uni to study performing arts furthur, go on to a drama school, allthough drama school are very hard to get into. You could also get a film and tv agent in which I have done in which you could film for films and tv productions which I have done. See my profile if you want to see what I have filmed or am soon going to be filming for.

I hope this has been some help to you. theres all kinds of things you can do you can major in music acting production. bassically for acting you take a lot of theater classes some music and film studies and production are options aswell a lot of written work comes with it and the written work has a huge influence on your grade. you learn scripts and how to break them down (basically decode them), dance and movement skills, classical theatre, political theatre, performing arts history, 2nd year you will do work experience and contemporary (modern theatre) improvisation (creating something on your own without script) you will work in groups a lot and only in the last year do you have a dance assignment on your own (i got a distinction in this: meaning best grade) and you will go on a lot of trips in the 1st year to theatres. very good course but as long as it is for you. it is very hard to pass this course and requires a lot of commitment and tolerance towards people who you find hard to work with. My stepdaughter is in her 2nd year doing performing arts/musical theatre - she is 17 and always wanted to do it from your age. Ive already answered your question now so she wont be able to and she is not at our house until Sunday night - so if you ask the question again next week( if you cant get a satisfactory answer) she may be able to help you. You learn to hone your skills. You learn the tecchniqes of the professionals, you practice your improvisation, you learn how to marry all of your talents together, manage your career, manage a facility, contracts, agents, meet people in the industry, how to critique other works, learn the classics, practice skills to modernize the classics and learn the pschology of the entertainment industry. try Stranmillis University College,Belfast.
Good facilities and lectureing staff.
stranmillis.co.uk Performing arts is a very broad topic/ title for a major in college. To select a major, you need to break down your major to a more definitive study of interest. In other words you need to specialize. Below I have listed some things you can major in. It would be my suggestion as you consider these to decide where your heaviest interest lies and then research schools which have strong programs for that major.

applied music (music performance in an instrument, or voice)
music education (be a music teacher)
music therapy - works music and psychology for therapies etc
musical theatre- Broadway (singing,acting, dancing)
theatre- acting (screen or stage)
theatre/drama education
applied dance (performance)
dance education
music composition
playwright/ screenplay writer
music arts entertainment business and management (agent)

get my idea? the list could go on and on in "performing arts"- but to be 14 and thinking about it, means you have time to ponder what makes you the happiest- since it takes absolutely loving it, to enjoy it while making a career of it

best of luck to you!
high school choir/ musical director 15 years Performing arts at college focuses mainly on acting and dancing. I did it years ago and got loads of jobs!

I had three years as a children's entertainer

2 seasons pantomime

playing in a piano cafe

travelling circus

And lots more that I got but couldn't take because I was too busy! ( The Wiggles touring show, Bananas in Pyjamas etc)

I chose children's entertainment, but you might be after something else. Get a good agent and go to lots of auditions.
