I know what each key is. I just can't recall them as quickly when playing a piece of music while reading notes. Then i'd have to think about it and look down, and that slows the whole thing dramatically. Any exercises or what not to help?

I know what each key is. I just can't recall them as quickly when playing a piece of music while reading notes. Then i'd have to think about it and look down, and that slows the whole thing dramatically. Any exercises or what not to help? Nothing I can say except practise. There's usually some kind of tips to get you mastering different aspects of music-making, but this one is really hard to give any tips on. What you need to develop (with continuous practice) is 'keyboard sense', which means the ability to play notes on keyboards by just feeling the intervals and hand positions that'll get you the right notes, instead of always looking down at your hands. This gets more important as you advance to higher grades. Often you'll find that you no longer have any time to look for the notes on the keyboard because there's just too many notes and too little time for your brain to process it. Advanced pianists go about playing their pieces mostly by touch instead of sight. We've to keep our eyes on the score but at the same time our hands need to know where to go.

Perhaps the only bit of advice I can give is to try starting with slower pieces that give you some time to roughly glance at which keys you should be pressing. Try to do it as much as possible without looking at your hands. Feel the intervals between different notes and how your hands should be positioned to play them correctly. When you've got that mostly nailed (trust me, it isn't quite possible to play a whole piece without ever glancing at your hands occasionally..what you need to accomplish is doing it as little as possible except during really big leaps - like more than an octave), slowly move on to faster songs that would train your reflex actions. You should never need to look at your hands when playing notes which are an octave or less apart.

All the best and keep playing! Source(s):
conservatory pianist, lifelong musician (violin, viola, harp, voice) The keys on the piano only go from A to G. You have a group of 3 black keys and a group of 2 black keys. The A is found between the 2nd and 3rd black keys in the set of three so start there going through the alphabet a,b,c,d,e,f,g,and back to a again.. This continues all up and down the keys on the piano. That should help a bit. All you need to do is identify where the A is and take it from there. Practice.
