Question:

Ways of tuning my guitar without a tuner? Ways for ear training?

I know the electric tuner is accurate and I know the 5th fret method, but I want to learn how to tune my guitar by ear. Any informations, tips or suggestions on how to do this?

Any suggestions on how to train my ear to recognize notes without a turner of guessing? I know this is important to learn to play better but no idea how to go about it.

And the local book store and guitar center does not sell such books on the subject.

Besides the 5th fret method. The downside to the fifth fret method is that you have to be sure your first string is in tune, which brings you back to your question. I recommend buying a tuning fork, tuned 440 A. You strike the fork and it will produce that tone. Then by ear tune your A string using 12th fret harmonics to that note. You can buy other tuning forks for each string but having just the one will give you a fine starting point. The fifth fret method will help your ear, but I really recommend using harmonics, because you get a purer tone. For example, the harmonic produced on the 7th fret of your high E will match the harmonic of the 5th fret of your B string. It won't work from B to G, but it will the rest of the way down to the low E. I hope this helps. If your not sure what harmonics are, you can look it up on youtube. There are some harmonic lessons from various players. Hope this helps. Practicing the 5th fret method is the only way, it's impossible to tell otherwise what are the right notes, you need something to work with first, that's the whole point of the 5th fret method. Ear training just requires practice and more practice.

Guitar tuning? Once you've gotten one string tuned (and provided your intonation is accurate), you can tune the rest harmonically.
