Question:

What is a good audition song?

I plan to audition for a musical at a community theatre in the next few months.
So I am just kinda getting ideas of what song i should sing.
It HAS to be a musical theatre song and it has to be under 2 minutes.
I want to be original, so I don't want to sing anything from Wicked. High School Musical, Les Mis, etc.
Any ideas?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The biggest mistake people make when picking an audition song is picking a song that sounds good when somebody else sings it. What you need is to find a song that is in a your range and shows off the best qualities of your voice, whether it is range (high or low or both), sustaining ability, power, or character (like Kristin Chedoweth from Wicked). Don't try to make your voice into something it is not. Celebrate the uniqueness of your own singing and your own style. Source(s):
I have a Master of Music in Education degree and a Bachelor of Art degree in music performance Singing in the Rain Every judge that I heard seems to be very impressed by the song, Somewhere Over the Rainbow, I think this song demonstrates your vocal range and most are impressed if you can get through this one.....good luck to you....I hope that you make it !!!!!!! bye !!!!!!! I always liked "Frank Mills" from the musical Hair. Not too long, and kind of offbeat. You have to tell what age/gender you are to get advice on a song for audition you could do someting from fiddler on the roof,
mulan...thats my pic, but i would really suggest a song called thereapy if you could find a guy to auddition with you. its so funny. you could sing seasons of love also from rent=] Hair-Spray! the song "Feelings" from "The Apple Tree" is a fun tune and is only about one and a half minutes. It has a great punch line at the end too. The part was originally sung by Barbara Harris but was recently revived on broadway by Kristin Chenewith ... and of course she is fabulous! If you look up her and the song and show on you tube I know they have it, not great visual quality but you can hear the song.

If you can't find a song that is under 2 minutes just use a two minute section of a song. Another great show you can look at for great solos /auditions is The Last Five Years - great tunes.
Remember to make the performance of any song in audition about you and your best qualities as a performer.
best of luck! i got the sun in the morning
reflection
much more
shy
think of me
wishing you were somehow here again
diamonds are a girls best friend
moon river What's the musical and what's your range? Once Upon A Dream from Jekyll and Hyde

This song is perfect to show of your range because you hit high and low notes!
**I've also heard judges say they don't like when people sing Somewhere Over the Rainbow because they don't bring their own style they just kind of copy Judy Garland and also they said that it's known as Judy Garland's song.
