Question:

How long does it take to become a competent pianist?

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Whatever you do, try to do concentrated practice regularly, even if it's just ten to fifteen minutes per day. Really try to listen to the sound you are making. The worst thing to do is to spend hours playing without thought, because all you do then is become very proficient at bad habits.

Regular concentrated practice will achieve better results more quickly than just fumbling around, but it is difficult to comment on exactly how long it would take to become 'competent'. For a start, what is the definition of competency, will you be learning by yourself, how much practice are you willing to do and so forth? The best thing to do is find an inspiring teacher who will encourage you and spur you on.

The piano is a beautiful and versatile instrument - enjoy!
