Question:

Need help playing higher notes on the flute!!!?

I`ve played the clarinet for over 8 years, and the oboe for about 4, and I really wanted to learn how to play the flute. I think it is such a pretty sounding instrument, but I can`t get any notes out past a D in the staff. It`s starting to get really annoying because I can only play in 1 octave.

Can someone please give me some tips...e.g..embochure, fingerings, anything...I only got the flute for christmas, so I`ve only been playing for a little over a month.

thanks,
angel

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: It's about the size of the opening of your lips. For higher notes, the opening is a bit smaller, to me, it's tighter feeling and the air flow is more direct and concentrated to the center of the hole you blow into. Also you need to blow a tiny bit harder for the high notes. I like to work up to the high notes when I practice. First, I'll play a song in the lowest possible octave then the next time, I move up to the next one in the same key. Relax your neck and shoulders, use good breath support techniques and be sure that you're holding your flute straight. Most of all, enjoy your time playing the flute. Play for the beauty of it, play for yourself, play because music is such a wonderful gift. You'll get it. Keep trying different intensities of breath control and sizes of your lip opening, and you'll be pleasantly surprised very soon! Good Luck!
