Question:

How can I get better at singing? Online tutorials, maybe?

I have never taken actual lessons before, but I am in chorus. This means that I don't really know anything about notes and keys and stuff. I'm 13. I don't want to take lessons quite yet; not enough time. I am a male, and I have a pretty low voice. I'm 5'8", if it helps. I like emo and alternative and rock. I would like to improve my range; it is quite low.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: Not sure if an on line tutorial can actually help, if there's no one around to guide you. I suggest you sing for yourself as much as possible. What I mean by that is, you sing your favorite music, and sing as well as you can. Slow songs are great for improving tone and building breath support, which is super important for volume and protecting the voice. (This really matters if you join a hard working band and you have to sing for 6 hours at a time, four times a week.) When you think you have the song down, get a good tape recorder and record yourself, with no instruments- just you. Then sit down in a quiet room and listen to yourself. Figure out what you like, and keep that. Listen again for what you don't like. What is it? Too much vibrato, poor pronunciation? (Can you understand every word?) Is it strong enough? Does it sound as cool as you want it too? No? Why not? Figure those things out, work on them, and then change them to what you do like. When you think you have it down, record it again. Listen, Listen, and Listen again. Pick it apart and work on it some more until you sound as great as you have always wanted to sound. I also recommend that you learn how to read music and tab, it's not that hard, you can do it. I can tell by your question, that you're pretty sharp. Don't forget to enjoy the practice. Music is such a gift in life, enjoy it.
