I play a violin. How hard would it be for me to learn the erhu? Can these be bought in the US? Can one teach themselves?

Note that one of the subsequent sites has an MP3 of the sound when played properly. And one discusses purchase. I saw one for $1000, and one for under a hundred. I am sure you can find something in between.
