"No drinking at this water fountain! No sitting on this bench!" It seems almost as bad, because people kept making rules keeping African-Americans down!. Did they hope that the race would die out because of a lack of food, because of a lack of jobs, because of a lack of mixing in!?Www@QuestionHome@Com
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I think I see where you are going with this!. Yes, in some ways racism -- specifically against African-Americans was worse after the Civil War!. Granted, slaves were treated horribly and I'm not debating that point, however things changed after the war!. People who were once slaves are now competing for paying jobs and that was a HUGE deal!. also, you cannot change perception by simply saying "slaves are free"!. The Civil War didn't automatically make people see African-Americans as equal -- even the abolitionists didn't really believe that!. But now, since they were free and citizens, it skewed what people were used to!. So, in order to maintain some sort of balance -- to keep the social world as close as possible -- a new kind of racism flourished!. This is what the Civil Rights movement was about!. That pent up anger resulted in even more excess hatred towards the African American race!. During slavery they were FORCED TO WORK for no pay, They were prohibited from learning, Seperated from their family, oh yeah and Beaten!!
