Question: Where did Gustav Adolf of Sweden fit into Richelieu's foreign policy in the early 1630s!?
Best Answer - Chosen by Asker:
Gustavus Adolphus, King of Sweden also known as Gustav II Adolf was aided by Cardinal Richelieu of France when he went to war against the Holy Roman Empire because he wanted to enlarge France's power and prestige in the world!. At that time, Europe was in the throes of the Thirty Year's War fought between Protestants and Catholics!. The Holy Roman Empire and Spain (the catholic side) went to war against many of the semi-autonomous states within the HRE because these states were supporting protestantism!. The HRE at that time was ruled by the Hapsburg dynasty which was the most powerful family in Europe at that time!. France was ruled by the Bourbon dynasty, a rival of the Hapsburgs for power in Europe!. Although France and Richelieu himself were Catholics, they supported the protestants because if the protestants won, it would mean the decline of strength of the Hapsburg dynasty!. Gustavus Adolphus was protestant and eagerly wanted to help the protestant cause!. And so Richelieu, sent financial aids to Sweden to support their war effort!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
