You have to remember that plastic and aluminum (foil) were expensive at that time!. So wrapping was done with waxed paper which was not as effective!. Still, sandwiches containing left-overs were common!. also, it depended on the area of the country you were in (US)!. For example, ethnic foods in Minnesota such as Leftsa and smoked fish in the southern states kept well!. As did baked breads everywhere, such as cake type breads (not too sweet though - sugar was expensive then)!. But to generalize here, I'd say fruits in season and canned fruits out of season, sandwiches with left-overs from the previous day such as beef, chicken, eggs, fish, and even wild game in the rural areas!. Butter was used extensively in rural areas too because it could be made at home!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

That would depend on where in the world you were and what job you were doing!.

After all for half of the 1940's the world was at war!.
There was rationing imposed in most Allied countries and many countries in Europe had little food of any kind!.
So, in general in the majority of countries in the world, you could discount any sweets, snacks and probably most fruit!.

(Food rationing continued for years after the war!.)Www@QuestionHome@Com

It was usually items that could be eaten by hand!. For example, a fried chicken leg!. also, you had fruit, but one that was juicy such as an orange or apple in case you didn't have something to drink!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
