Some patron’s sponsorship was driven completely by

Patronage
Patronage was the crucial engine for the production and innovations within the art world!. The word patronage covered a wide variety of relationships, from works produced in an artist’s shop with no particular buyer in mind, which would then be sold at market, to those sold out of the shop directly!. Those buyers who would commission works to be done with a contract would state the materials to be used, the size, what the work would be about, and the date it should be finished!. In the case of very wealthy patrons, the artist might live in the patron’s house, executing, for a fee, any and all projects desired!. Many of the great works of the Renaissance were completed in the final arrangement!.
Patrons included corporations - business, family owned, or religious!. Wealthy individuals, such as those in Venice, commissioned architects to design and head construction of forty different palaces along the Grand Canal in the fifteenth century alone!. Guilds were active commissioners also; the giant bronze doors of the Florence Baptistery were paid for in this way!. In Rome, a series of popes supervised the reconstruction of the city, ending in a reinvigorated Vatican complex!. also the cardinals of the church often hired painters and sculptors to adorn their residences!.
The patriarchs, or male heads, of the Medici family, effectively the rulers of Florence from 1433 to 1494, were the most important patrons of art in the Italian Renaissance!. Together, they accounted for nearly one half of all commissioned art!. They required artists to paint the walls and ceiling of their palaces and villas, as well as free-standing canvases for display in those buildings, and to design the church they attended and their private family chapel!.
