Position:Home>History> What were the positive and negative aspects of the Manifest Destiny?

Question:The positives are easy: more land, more money, more resources, and more everything for the nation involved. The negatives for the nation doing it are probably just the clashes with the nations it is taking over. Had Indians united to oppose the Americans, the United States may only have the East coast of this continent, but that didn't happen.

The negative I'm thinking of is the negative of the people being taken. Obviously, the biggest thing about America's expansion west was that they wiped out, almost to the point of genocide, the races of the Native American people (I'm an Indian, in a completely unrelated matter). Loss of life and the stealing of land should be a serious setbacks for a moraly-high people, but I enjoy watching Family Guy and playing Xbox 360, so who am I to complain?

The obvious positive aspect was increasing the size of the United States. The negative was removal and genocide of most of the Native-American tribes.

+ The United States gaining in size, in wealth, and in international influence. giving more opportunity to people who couldn't find it in the East- with an abundance of farmland and precious gems and minerals like gold and silver.

- The question of slavery- (which territories would be slave states? which would be free?)
and of course the decimation/subjugation of the Native American tribes- Wounded Knee, the Cheyenne being moved to reservations...
