Older folks---Li'l Abner, joe bifflestick?

I was completely lost the other day when someone mentioned a guy in a cartoon with a rain cloud over his head. Can someone please, please tell me what's up with that? I totallly did not get what was going on in the conversation.

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: In Al Capp's L'll Abner, Joe Bifflestick, (with the black cloud always over his head,) represented the absolute defeatist in all departments of life. He never saw a sunny day, (happy day), but only the gloomy dark days..... which in his mind was always everyday. The black cloud over his head was the symbol of incurable depression......he was the consumate complainer, defeatist and the worst sour apple the world has ever seen.
