they are taken every ten years, what happens is, people have to give every name of the people that are living in a house and their occupation, age, who is the head of the house and what is everyones relation to that person, also where they were born!. before 1851 census, they hardly any info only names!.

The most simplistic definition is to COUNT persons!. In practice, countries take the "census" to find how many people there are!.!. but also they include different questions, ie, occupation, age, place of birth, so forth!.
You could call it a form of taking statistics, and collecting information that is of use!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

I like my western civ prof's definition the best: counting heads to determine taxes!.

Ofcourse many censuses include other demographic information, but that's the basic definition and purpose they all share in common!.Www@QuestionHome@Com
