It comes from a lot of countries, including Spain, France, Italy, Switzerland and Germany!. It doesn't just mean "from France", it also is what we call a "patrynomic name"!. That means it could have come from the Latin word for the name "Francis"!.

Your best solution is to ask your grandpa on your dad's side!. He'll know where his ancestors were originally from!. Then you get a real answer that means something to you!. That's the real purpose of this assignment!. The people who try to take shortcuts and go to websites can end up at scam sites like houseofnames!. If your teacher knows anything about genealogy, they'll know that those sites lie about names!. They'll also know that names are more than the person who originally used them!. They're the sum of all the people in between that first person and you!. Your Social Studies teacher is hoping you'll figure out who those people were and that you'll use this as a chance to start talking to your parents and grandparents to learn more about your own family!.Www@QuestionHome@Com

Its original meaning was "from France!."

The previous answerer is correct, of course, but by the time surnames became popular and "necessary", the Franks had become the French, their German roots notwithstanding!.

Some ancestor of yours on your father's father's father's (etc) side either was from France or looked French on the day the locals were giving out surnames!.
