Question:

Can someone help me with Scottish surnames/clans?

i'm looking to find out what clan the surname "hall" is from in scotland, if anybody has ANY information, i'll take it :)

Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: The name "Hall" itself has no Scottish Clan affiliation in itself. This from checking, "Scottish Clans and Tartans" By Robert Bain, edition of 1961 and a much older book "The Origin and Signification of Scottish Surnames" ByClifford Stanley Sims,Publiahed in Albany NY in 1862.
Scottish Clans were in the Highlands and there were important Lowland Families in Scotland before the Union of the Crowns in 1707. Clan and Sept names tend to come from this period. Since that time English folk moved to Scotland and married, and Scottish people reversed the process so Clan or Sept name could be lost by marriage
In the 1600s Scottish settlers were placed in the 7 Northern Ireland Counties and again a clan or sept name could be covered
Websters 9th New Collegiate Dictionary says "Hall" Comes the Old English[haell] and Middle English [Halle] meaning a small room. Having a name with a English term does not preclude being Scottish.
If a ancester ever lived in Scotland, than he can claim to be Scottish. Being Scottish is a state of mind as the present debate over Scottish Independence has brought out.
As to a Tartan if you wish to wear one ther are several historical tartans than can be worn as Jacobite, and the new Flower of Scotland.tartan being offered by the "Corries"
Clan trartans as such really did not exist until after the 1845 prohibition of Tartan, Kilts, Bag Pipes etc after the failed Bomnnie Prince Charily rising. What tartans were worn befor that were "Regional Tartans" meaning the colors were from the Dye materials available in any particular part of Scotland and patterns wer as set up by individual weavers. Today we have regional tartans for all parts of Scotland {and Ireland} the countrys in the old British Empire, over 30 US states and specil ones for universitys and other organizations as US Air Force. Find a book of regional tartans and choose onr to suit your taste
My Scots Ancestors came by way of Ireland to the Colonies. So I say I am about half a shot of Scotch and all the rest is Ice and Soda. But i choose to be a Scotch-o-phile and have drummed in Bag Pipe bands for 60 years.
