Best Answer - Chosen by Asker: I've used findmypast.com (formerly 1837online), mentioned by fengirl2, a lot.
It gives access to b/m/d index numbers for England/Wales from 1837 - 2004 (you can use these to order certificates from Governement Records Office ), overseas births (1761-1994), births at sea (1854-1887), marriages overseas (1761-1994), marriages at sea (1854-1887), British deaths overseas (1761-1994), deaths at sea (1854-1890), index to death duty registers (1796-1903), soldiers who died in the Great War (1914-1918), WW2 roll of honour (1939-45). Additionally, England/Wales census returns for 1841, 1861, 1891census returns are available, along with migration information from 1890-1960.
All these are available on a pay per view basis. If you are planning alot of searches it is well worth buying plenty of units at one go, if you can afford it.
